As part of their ongoing roster moves following the conclusion of the 2023 season, Memphis 901 FC announced on Tuesday that they are bringing back forward Kyle Murphy on a multi-year contract.
“I think Memphis is really striving for success,” Murphy said via a team press release. “I think the whole plan for the club for the future looks great and I always had great memories and feelings from being in Memphis and playing. It was a pretty easy decision for me to make. When I figured out it would be a possibility, I was really excited.”
Excitement was the theme of the day for 901 FC, as it should be given how successful Murphy was in Memphis back in 2021.
“We are very excited to welcome Kyle and his wife Annemarie back to the 901,” Assistant Sporting Director Caleb Patterson-Sewell said in the press release. “Kyle has demonstrated throughout this process how much he wanted to play for this club and how much he identified with how the team plays now. This has been a key pillar to our recruitment this off-season, bringing in players that want to be all in for this city, this community, this Club, and identify with our coach and his style. Kyle was first class throughout.”
Murphy is a seven-year veteran of the USL Championship with over 200 appearances and 61 goals to his name. He spent his last two seasons at Miami FC where he bagged a total of 16 goals. But his one season in Memphis was something special. His 2021 campaign was one for the club history books as he set the single season record with 21 goals. Those goals were of tremendous importance to 901 FC as they were able to finish third in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference (a product of COVID scheduling) and make the playoffs for the first time in team history (falling in the first round on the road against the Charlotte Independence).
“We’re all going there with the expectation to win and keep moving forward to hopefully bring a championship to Memphis,” Murphy said per the release. “That’s the ultimate goal for everybody… I’m just excited to wear the Memphis colors again and be back in the town playing for them.”
More news regarding new signing is expected to be announced in the near future. Preseason camp is slated to open on January 15, 2024.
