Memphis 901 FC announced on Thursday that the team has signed veteran attacker Jon Bakero to a short-term contract. Bakero comes to Memphis 901 FC with a wealth of experience, having played for several different clubs in a number of different countries.
At the college level, Bakero was a teammate of Bruno Lapa at Wake Forest and was named the Mac Hermann Trophy winner as well as ACC Offensive Player of the Year. He was drafted 5th overall in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire and also played for Toronto FC in MLS.
“Jon joins us with a wealth of experience and has had a lot of success in this league previously,” said Acting Sporting Director Caleb Patterson-Sewell. “He has very good movement, finishing, and fits what we look for in a player’s character. We look forward to welcoming Jon and his fiancé to Memphis.”
Most recently, Bakero was playing with Club Lleida Esportiu in Spain and also had a pair of stints with Slavia Sofia in Bulgaria. Perhaps most importantly for Memphis 901 FC, Bakero has a wealth of USL Championship experience with 72 appearances and 11 goals to his name during his time with the Phoenix Rising.
Fans of the Beale Street Boys can see Bakero, as well as new goalkeeper Triston Henry, when the team returns to AutoZone Park this Saturday for the first time in nearly a month. It’s back to school night, as well as a post-game fireworks night, with kickoff against San Antonio FC set for 7:30. Tickets are available on the team website.
