Memphis 901 FC and Phoenix Rising matches usually involve offensive fireworks. Sixteen combined goals had been scored in the first three matches.
The fourth — and most important of the bunch — had only one. Dylan Borczak scored the deciding goal just before halftime.
Borczak flipped the field quickly with a pass down the right wing to Jon Bakero before making a run towards goal. He hustled to Bakero’s cross and beat the defender to the ball, directing it towards the back post. His fourth goal of the season has kept Memphis in the chase for a home playoff game.
Akeem Ward generated two chances of his own before Borczak found the breakthrough. Ward was active, helping command the attack with crosses and opportunistic shots toward goal.
Memphis were the more clinical side but Phoenix’s Darius Johnson made an impact early. He created for himself and others from the left wing in one-on-one situations.
Phoenix had the possession and opportunities, just not the shots on target. Their only one came in the 85th minute from a free kick from Charlie Dennis, the ball rattling the crossbar before being cleared by Memphis.
One game remains for every Western conference team with all to play for. Memphis sits in fifth place but could leap to second if results fall their way. With Oakland four points behind in sixth, there is no danger of dropping any further.
