Memphis 901 FC is still struggling to get on track this season. After winning their season opener against the Las Vegas Lights, they have dropped three straight games. They fell at home to Indy Eleven before they had a bye week. Following that was a trip out to California to face the Sacramento Republic where they gave a good account of themselves but came up short and fell 1-0. Their return to AutoZone Park to face Orange County SC was a similar story as the Beale Street Boys played well enough to get a result but conceded two quick goals in the second half and did not recover.
Despite the tough stretch, Coach Glass says the team has had a very good week of training.
“Any time we don’t get what we think we should’ve in a game the boys are disappointed as we are as a staff. So I think there’s an obvious disappointment but I think when you know you should have done more within a game it kind of taints your picture a little bit that you know it was there for you. It then bleeds into the training and becomes positive and the lads know we’ve got the players to go and get points and score goals on the road. We’ve done it plenty in the last year and had a great performance at Sacramento. And I think we need to just go and build , start getting points, and climb the table as quick as we can.”
One of the things the team has focused on in training this week is finding ways to score goals. In four games this year, 901 FC has scored multiple goals just once (against Vegas) and has been held scoreless in each of the last two games. Coach Glass said the focus at training on goal scoring was a hit with the players.
“I think being cleaner in the final third. We made some decent chances at the weekend but didn’t execute really well. So the focus has been hitting the back of the net all week. The lads have enjoyed that so it’s been a nice week of training seeing the ball hit the net.”
Loudoun United comes into this game on a run of form not too terribly dissimilar from Memphis 901 FC’s. They too have played just four games this season. They got a 2-2 draw in their opener against San Antonio FC and followed that up with a 3-1 win over North Carolina FC. It’s been downhill for them since then with consecutive losses, first to Detroit City by a 3-1 scoreline and then a 3-1 loss to the Birmingham Legion.
