Without a doubt, Memphis 901 FC is one of the hottest teams in the USL Championship at the moment. They are now on a five-game unbeaten run dating back to the end of April. Those five games are four wins and one draw. But 901 FC is not just resting on their recent success. They are attempting to get better and add new pieces they believe can help them improve. On Wednesday, the team announced the acquisition of Nick DePuy from Huntsville City on a short-term loan. The addition of DePuy comes at a critical time for the Beale Street Boys as they gear up for stretch of a lot of games in a short span, which includes three home games in eight days between June 8 and June 15.
One of the key elements that 901 FC focused on when constructing their roster during the off-season was finding high quality players who wanted to be in Memphis and who would fight for each other and the city. Head Coach Stephen Glass believes DePuy fits that mold very well.
“Yeah definitely. You just talked to him there, he’s a big boy, he’s a tough character.” Glass said. “He’s very experienced at the MLS level, so a level above where we play continually. I don’t see any reason why he’s not going to come in and have all those attributes. When he had the opportunity to come, he was hungry to come and do it which again, speaks to how much he wants to actually be here. So, we’re pleased to have him. I think he’s pleased with what he’s come into as well.”
DePuy’s arrival comes with 901 FC getting ready to head out on the road against San Antonio FC. The meeting between the two teams last year was a rough one, as the Beale Street Boys were pounded at home 4-0. It’s a hammering that the players certainly haven’t forgotten as Coach Glass detailed.
“We know San Antonio is a tough place to go. Tough team, hard to beat. They’re a little down at the minute so they may be a little bit of a wounded animal. But we know what they’re capable of based on what they came and did to us here last year. There’s a lot of boys that played in that game last year that want to put things right so we’re looking forward to a big night and hopefully we can come out on the right side.”
As Coach Glass mentioned, San Antonio are a little bit down at the moment. Despite having finished in the top four of the Western Conference each of the last four seasons (winning a championship in 2022) they currently sit in the final playoff place at 8th in the West, just a single point ahead of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 9th. They were one-and-done in the US Open Cup this year, falling 2-0 away to Indy Eleven. Coming into this game against 901 FC, they are on a four-match winless streak that featured two draws and two losses, the most recent of which was 2-1 against New Mexico United.
