Memphis 901 FC vs. New Mexico United Preview

Memphis 901 FC’s most recent routing against Rhode Island FC was a wild one. Wednesday night at AutoZone Park saw 901 FC fall behind by a pair of goals after a poor start. As has been the message from the coaches since before the season started, there is no quit in this team. And the Beale Street Boys didn’t quit and were somehow, some way able to equalize in stoppage time to rescue a point at home. But the test that awaits them this Saturday figures to be much tougher as they get set to host first place New Mexico United.

The game on Wednesday became a wild affair in the second half when there was a chaotic goal line situation in which Tyler Deric misplayed a pass back to him and as it started rolling towards the open goal mouth. As he dove towards the ball, a Rhode Island attacker got there at almost the same instant. The assistant referee signaled that the ball had crossed the line giving Rhode Island a 2-0 lead. The game flipped on its head with less than five minutes to play. Nighte Pickering was in on goal and was crushed by the Rhode Island keeper, who was sent off and shown a red card. Samuel Careaga buried the free kick and gave 901 FC a lifeline. Deep into stoppage time, Lucas Turci was brought down in the area and Marlon Santos buried the penalty to even the score and salvage a point for the home side.

New Mexico not only sits atop the Western Conference but comes into the game against 901 FC having won four of their last five games. Even better for them is that they are one of three USL Championship teams remaining in the US Open Cup after they eliminated both an MLS team (Real Salt Lake) and the attempted MLS replacement team, New York City FC II of MLS Next Pro. Not only have they been winning games in league play but they’ve been very stout defensively. In fact, they haven’t given up more than a single goal in a game since a 3-0 loss away to the Tamp Bay Rowdies back on April 27th.
