Unsurprisingly, the University of Memphis announced on Friday that the FedExForum is sold out for Sunday’s matchup against No. 1 Houston. The Cougars have been the top-ranked team in the country for nearly two weeks, and Penny Hardaway and the Tigers are eagerly awaiting them.
Houston has already defeated Memphis this season, but the story goes a bit past surface level. Hardaway’s team was without its star guard – Kendric Davis – and still only lost by eight points.
Since that game, Memphis has looked extremely impressive, and they likely locked themselves into the NCAA Tournament with a win over SMU on Thursday night. Despite the recent success, this team would still absolutely love to defeat the Cougars.
This is the first time the No. 1 team in the country has visited Memphis, and Hardaway and his squad could draw a ton of momentum with a win in this game. The conference tournament is looming and a win over Houston could propel the Tigers to a big weekend in Fort Worth.
ESPN’s Basketball Power Index currently gives the Cougars an 83.5 percent chance to win the AAC matchup.
