Frank Haith left Memphis shortly after the season ended to be an assistant coach at Texas, and Penny Hardaway is expected to hire Rick Stansbury to fill Haith’s vacated position.
According to a source, a deal is being worked out but isn’t finalized at the moment. The expectation is for the hire to be announced next week.
Stansbury has been a collegiate coach since 1981, and he has been a head coach at both Mississippi State (1998-2012) and Western Kentucky (2016-2023). In between his stops with MSU and WKU, Stansbury spent three years as an assistant at Texas A&M. Stansbury has a head coaching record of 441-255 and a 4-6 record in the NCAA Tournament.
Needless to say, this is a home-run hire for Hardaway if and when the deal gets done.
