On Thursday, the University of Memphis men’s basketball program and the NCAA reached an agreement on recruiting violations. Here are some of the penalties issued by the NCAA:
- One year of probation to run consecutively with the school’s current probationary period from an Independent Accountability Resolution Process case.
- A $5,000 fine.
- A prohibition against all recruiting communications in men’s basketball for two weeks during the 2022-23 academic year.
- A prohibition against off-campus recruiting activities by the head coach and an assistant coach for 15 days during the 2021-22 academic year (self-imposed).
- A reduction in the number of recruiting-person days in men’s basketball by four during the 2021-22 academic year (self-imposed). The school will also reduce the number of recruiting-person days in men’s basketball by four for the 2022-23 academic year.
- A reduction in official visits for men’s basketball by two during the 2022-23 academic year.
The University of Memphis released a statement on Thursday afternoon:
“We acknowledge that a violation occurred in our men’s basketball program during the 2021-22 academic year, and we worked directly and collaboratively with the NCAA from an institutional standpoint to negotiate this resolution. As the NCAA indicated earlier today, one individual is exercising his right to work directly with the NCAA on his portion of the case and we are supportive of his right to do so. Per NCAA bylaws, we are not permitted to provide further comment on the matter until the process is resolved, the timeframe for which is pending.”
JAYLON ALLEN ANNOUNCES HE WILL RETURN FOR THE 2023 SEASON
Although the Penny Hardaway basketball program received bad news on Thursday, Ryan Silverfield and his staff were treated with good news. Redshirt senior defensive lineman Jaylon Allen announced via Twitter that he will come back for a sixth season.
Allen became a leader for the Tigers defense during the 2022 season, and he was named Honorable Mention All-AAC and Fourth-Team All-AAC by Phil Steele. Last year, the senior racked up 56 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception.
During his career at Memphis, Allen has appeared in 46 games and figures to be a fixture of the Tigers’ defense during the ’23 season.
