Memphis 901 FC’s sixth season in the USL Championship is drawing ever closer. The season opener is just around the corner. But before they get there, they have one more preseason game to play. And this one continues a nice variety of opponents. Their first two games were against MLS teams and their third one was last Saturday against the University of Memphis. To close out the preseason, they are traveling to take on MLS Next Pro side St. Louis City II.
While they may not count for much of anything, the results so far this preseason for the Beale Street Boys have been positive nonetheless. First was a 1-1 draw on the road against Atlanta United, an MLS team. Next was another 1-1 draw on the road, this time against Nashville SC, also an MLS team. Most recently was a 2-1 win against the University of Memphis, that was technically an away game despite being in Memphis, as it was over at the Billy Murphy Track & Soccer Stadium at the South Campus of the UofM.
More impressive than the results however, is the fact that in all three games, 901 FC has scored first and done so within the first few minutes. In the first game it was Nighte Pickering who got the party started. Next up against Nashville, Luiz Fernando fired 901 FC in front. Against the Memphis Tigers, it was new signing Marlon Santos who put the Beale Street Boys ahead. Unlike the previous two games however, they didn’t stop at just one goal as Bruno Lapa converted a penalty that gave them a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish. No doubt that many fans will be hoping for more of the same in St. Louis as a way for momentum to carry into the season opener.
