Throughout the rest of the season, Bluff City Media will track Memphis’ NCAA tournament resume on a weekly basis. Using the NET rankings, KenPom rankings and ESPN bracketology, we will keep you updated on where the Tigers are ranked.
School | Record | Road | Neutral | Home | Quad 1 | Quad 2 | Quad 3 | Quad 4 |
Memphis | 12-5 | 1-4 | 3-1 | 8-0 | 1-2 | 3-3 | 3-0 | 5-0 |
The Tigers are now 12-5 overall and 2-2 in American Athletic Conference (AAC) play after a 69-59 victory over East Carolina at home and a 107-104 double overtime loss at UCF. That 1-1 stretch helped propel the Tigers from 59 to 50 in the NET rankings and remain steady in the KenPom rankings at 36. The Tigers avoided a Quad 4 loss to a now 197th NET ranked East Carolina, and they were not able to secure a Quad 1 one against the Knights.
In ESPNs latest Bracketology, Joe Lunardi has officially listed the Tigers on the bubble in the “Last Four In” and dropped them from the No. 8 seed in the Midwest (Kansas City) region to the No. 11 seed in the South (Louisville) region in the play-in game slot. In turn, UCF defeating Memphis pushed them into the “Last Four In” as well adding a third team from the AAC to the NCAA Tournament bracket.
Next up, Memphis will visit the Temple Owls Sunday afternoon in what looks to be a Quad 3 game as the Owls are currently ranked 157th in the NET rankings. Temple is currently ahead of Memphis in the conference standings as they are tied for second place with UCF and Tulane. Memphis is currently sixth in the standings with a 2-2 record. Also, this game is important from a confidence standpoint as the Tigers have struggled in true road environments with a 1-4 record overall and 0-2 in conference road games.
Quadrant | Home | Neutral | Away |
Q1 | 1-30 | 1-50 | 1-75 |
Q2 | 31-75 | 51-100 | 76-135 |
Q3 | 76-160 | 101-200 | 136-240 |
Q4 | 161+ | 201+ | 241+ |
Now that the Tigers are officially on the bubble, they cannot afford to lose many more opportunities against perceived lesser competition. Also, with UCF joining the bubble race and Tulane surging right now, avenging those conference road losses when both of the teams come to the FedEx Forum in February will help. It is not time to push the panic button as there is a lot of season left but the margin of error is becoming slim.
