Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX

How to Watch/Stream: Bally Sports Southeast

Mired in a season of raised stakes, each game becomes a must-win for Memphis. The reason being is because each win they string together helps determine a great deal about how the rest of the season goes with Ja back. Hey, at least the guys also got the memo this time.

I would say so, at least based on how they played Wednesday night in Utah. And they’ll need to keep that energy and pace up tonight too. A lower rung West team like the Jazz, Dallas is not. Not at 11-6 on the year. No, that record is good enough for the Mavericks to be 3rd in the West as of this writing.

As such, expect this game to more challenging. In fact… If I were you, I’d expect each game to be a challenge this point til 12’s return. See the Grizzlies have a gauntlet of a schedule on their hands til then. There’s only a single game I’d call an “automatic win”, and that’s the added game against Detroit.

Meanwhile, Memphis plays Dallas two times in as many weeks starting tonight. At the risk of stating the obvious, a win in one or both games would be ideal. Taking one of these games from Dallas like it’s their lunch money would go a long way for this team. And not only that but—again with the obvious—it would help put the Grizzlies in optimal position. In regards to placement for Play-In contention. Which—like it or not—that’s where we’re at. But I’m getting too far ahead of myself… Bottom line: focus on the game, and the dub tonight if we can. The rest will follow.

What’s the answer for Luka?

To say that Luka Dončić is what steers the Dallas Mavericks ship is the understatement of the year. Or better yet the understatement of the last few years. Luka is the best on the Mavs in the following categories:

Minutes played. Field goals made. Field goals attempted. Three pointers made. Three pointers attempted. Free throws made. Free throws attempted. Defensive rebounds. Total Rebounds. Assists. Steals. And points. That’s over ten statistical areas where he leads Dallas which in and of itself is wild.

I know… It’s almost not fair. He’s currently ranked 3rd in the entire NBA in points per game and 6th in assists. He is also tied for 2nd in the league in number of games with over 30 PTS (10 games). Great news. All things that bode well for a team that has struggled an immense amount defending the ball on all levels.

Not.

You see the problem don’t you? How do you zero in on someone with—as I mentioned earlier—less than adequate defenders? When all you need to do is clamp down Luka and leave it to the rest of the Mavs to beat you… but you can’t? That’s frustrating and limits your options.

As such, stopping Luka most likely won’t be an option for this squad. Assuming they can’t stop him… There’s always the chance the Grizzlies out duel him. The very Bane-iest of chances they try to keep pace with him.

And that’s what it would come down to right? It would have to be Desmond that does it, if Memphis hopes to succeed in matching Dončić’s firepower. He’s already only four spots behind Luka tied for 6th in games exceeding 30 points this year (6 games).

It’s going to be a big ask regardless. As is Bane in getting double teamed on every single possession the Grizzlies take. He’ll already be fighting through that, and with the added pressure of besting Dončić… It stands to be a challenge to say the least. One that his majesty “The Fly-By King” is—fingers crossed—ready for.

Opposite Ends of the 3-Point Spectrum

Not sure there could be two teams on more opposite sides of the three ball than Memphis and Dallas. At least without scripting it. There’s something very Hollywood-esque about the entire conflicting viewpoints angle… Which, how conflicting are we talking here?

For starters, the Mavs are currently ranked 6th in the league when it come to 3PT% (37.5). During this time, they’re also 2nd in the league when it comes to 3PA with 42.6 per game. Now the Grizzlies aren’t that far behind the Mavericks in this area either. They are averaging the 4th most three point attempts in the league at this rate (39.9 per game).

How many of those attempts are good for a bucket though? Very little turns out. In fact Memphis is dead last. Dead last in the league in 3PT% with 32.7%.

Huh. You would think if you had managed to stay dead last in shooting the three ball you would… I don’t know… Stop shooting said three ball so much. You know… On account of the team never making a damn one of them… But I digress.

Because we—on occasion—will have nights where our guys catch fire from 3-point-land still. Cough cough David Roddy from two nights ago sneeze cough. Pardon me. Now, could it be more common you ask? I mean…Sure. But one step at at time right?

Other Guys, Other Losses?

It’s worth mentioning that three of the Mavs six losses have come in the last 5 games. Consider it recency bias if you must… But why not see what worked against them in these three latest losses? You know, on account of it helping those teams beat Dallas and all…

The first thing that I notice worked, was the lack of zealotry when stopping Luka and Kyrie Irving. And I mean that as a good thing. The duo had 20+ points in each of the losses, seeming to lose each game in spite of themselves—and others.

For example, you’ll notice in the losses the Mavs bigs were non factors. They failed to get double digit points in any of the three recent losses and only hit double digits boards once. The only true size they have that they tend to use down-low is rookie center Dereck Lively II anyway. The opposing centers (Sabonis, Lopez, Zubac) in these games bully balled the hell out of the rook.

Now Bismack Biyombo is more like the diet, zero version of those guys… But capable of throwing bodies and bows in the paint with the best of them. If Bis is able to impose himself—even if it’s a little bit—that’s a good sign things are going our way this game.

Another good sign? If our bench can out bench theres. Meaning Memphis needs to limit the production they get from their bench. Especially if they can also limit Tim Hardaway Jr.—safe to say the early front-runner for 6MOY—too. He’s been the only reserve that’s produced in these losses and in general.

Slowing him down and slowing down the Dallas bigs and reserves? If the Grizzlies can do that—and yes I realize that’s a big if—it’s another mark in their favor for stealing the dub.
