Memphis 901 FC announced today the team has signed Walid “Tulu” Yacoubou to a multi-year contract.

Tulu comes to 901 FC from San Antonio FC where he spent the second half of the 2023 season, scoring one goal in six appearances. Prior to his move to San Antonio FC, he spent two and a half seasons with the Hartford Athletic where he made 52 appearances and scored three goals.

“We are delighted to welcome Tulu to Memphis,” Assistant Sporting Director Caleb Patterson-Sewell said. “He is very experienced in the Championship and brings good athleticism to our defensive group, he is strong 1v1 and has very good character. Our fans will love his style of play and we look forward to Tulu helping us achieve success in 2024.”

Not only does Tulu have plenty of experience in the USL Championship with over 60 games for a total of three clubs, he also has some experience playing in Europe. In 2018 he made five appears for HFK Trebic in the Czech Republic and also made six appearances for IFK Holmsund in Sweden. Following a brief stint with the Tulsa Roughnecks in 2019 (now FC Tulsa) he spent the 2020 season in Portugal with Sporting Ideal, making five appearances.

Tulu is the latest in a list of signing for Memphis 901 FC this off-season. The team announced back in November that they were retaining ten players from last year’s team that finished fourth in the Eastern Conference and hosted a home playoff game. That announcement was followed a day later with the addition from Miami FC of Kyle Murphy, who led 901 FC in goal scoring back in 2021. Most recently, the team announced a new, multi-year contract for captain Leston Paul, and brought in forward Noe Meza who tallied 23 goals and six assists in USL League One with Union Omaha.

More news regarding new signings and players with options on their contract will be announced in the near future.

The season for 901 FC kicks off on Saturday, March 9 downtown at AutoZone Park against the Las Vegas Lights, with another home game the following Saturday against Indy Eleven.

2024 season tickets are on sale now and information regarding single game ticket sales will be made available soon.
