The University of Memphis’ women’s soccer team made program history Friday night by defeating Mississippi State 4-0 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time where they will take on the host team and #9 ranked University of Arkansas.

Goalie, Clair Wyville once again posted a clean sheet, her fourth in the last five matches.  Senior, Saorla Miller netted the first goal for Memphis off a direct free kick at the 24’ mark.

Ten minutes into the second half, Mya Jones, off the assist from Momo Nakao, hit an improbable goal that was just out of the reach of the Bulldog goalie, Maddy Anderson.  Seven minutes after the Jones goal, Grace Stordy and Miller teamed for a nice give and go with Stordy beating the Bulldog defender to the ball and punching it into the net.

Sophomore, Anne-Valerie Seto closed out the scoring when she lofted a ball that hit off the post and across the goal line.

Coach Brooks Monaghan called the match, “One of our best performances this season.”

Memphis is now 11-5-5 on the season and one of only two teams left in the tournament that began unseeded.  Arkansas advanced off a 5-2 win over Ohio St.  The last time Memphis and Arkansas met was in 2016, a match Arkansas won in extra time 2-1 on a golden goal at the 93’ mark.  Kickoff against Arkansas is at 5:00 PM on Sunday, Nov. 20 with coverage on ESPN+.
