Breaking News: Memphis 901 FC Forward Kyle Murphy Announces Retirement

In a shock move on Thursday morning, Memphis 901 FC forward Kyle Murphy announced his retirement from soccer.

“I have had to make a difficult decision to retire from soccer” Murphy said via a social media post shared by the team. “Out of my 26 years of playing the game, my season in Memphis will always be one of my favorites. I appreciate all the support from the fans. I will always be a big 901 supporter and fan!”

Murphy retires after having spent seven years in the USL Championship, where he amassed over 200 appearances and tallied 61 goals for six different teams.

Murphy was one of the biggest signings in the USL this year and a big part of the killer off-season Memphis 901 FC was having. Murphy of course, played with 901 FC in 2021 where he helped the team make the playoffs for the first time ever by scoring a then-club record 21 goals. Following his stint in Memphis he spent the last two years playing for Miami FC.

His retirement will no doubt leave a big hole to fill in the Memphis attack as the 2024 season rapidly approaches, though 901 FC has signed several other key attackers this off-season.

Memphis 901 FC has their first preseason game in just over a week, as they will travel to Athens, Georgia to take on Atlanta United of MLS. Following that, they will have four more preseason games to get everybody fit and learn their roles. Two of those preseason games will be in Memphis against CBU and the UofM.

The regular season for 901 FC begins on Saturday, March 9 against the Last Vegas Lights downtown at AutoZone Park. Kickoff times for all but one 901 FC home game (the following Saturday’s game against Indy Eleven) were announced earlier this week.

Season tickets for the 2024 season are now on sale, and information regarding when single game tickets will go on sale is due to be made public in the near future.
