Memphis Hustle basketball was officially back on Sunday after nearly a week hiatus as they took on the Birmingham Squadron live from Alabama. It appears as if the break benefited the team, as they were firing on all cylinders in the second half on their way to claiming a much-needed win. Jason Preston, David Johnson, and David McGriff were all on-point in the matchup combining for 67 points, 16 assists, and 27 rebounds.

The Squadron came into the Sunday matchup 4-1 on the season and looking to steamroll their way into a 5-1 record; unfortunately for them, Memphis came with heat and out-showed them on their own hardwood. Alabama was led by the charge of former Cincinnati standout Landers Nolley II, who provided a smooth 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Dereon Seabron, who also notched 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Outside of those two main players, production was an issue.

The Memphis Hustle, on the other hand, came into the afternoon 2-5 on the season, desperate for a third win. Luckily for them, Jason Preston was able to notch a triple-double to cash in 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists with zero turnovers in by far his most impressive showing this season. Cameron McGriff recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and David Johnson lit it up for a game-high 27 points on the afternoon.

The Hustle and Squadron were back and forth in the first half of basketball, going blow-for-blow, until Birmingham ended the first half on a nice run to lead Memphis 61-53. The second half started the same way, except it was Memphis that ended the quarter on a run to create some separation going into the final period via an impressive 18-2 run.

It was a very positive sight for this Hustle squad, who have had issues closing out fourth quarters throughout this season. It’s refreshing to see the team capitalize on their struggles, especially against a team that has been playing amazing basketball thus far in the season.

Today was the first glimpse of how good the Hustle can be when they all play to their strengths and come together as a unit. It was a good and much-needed win for the team tonight that I am sure they hope to build on moving forward.

The Hustle will resume action on Tuesday night versus the Austin Spurs, live from the Landers Center in Southaven, at 7:00pm as they look to build a winning streak. For tickets, call (901)888-HOOP, visit https://memphis.gleague.nba.com/ticket-central, or the Landers Center box office.

  1. Make at least $928 every day working online for a while. My closest friend’s $29,000 tale helps me decide what to do. But I don’t think it’s worth it since it’s so real compared td06 to the life I lead now.
