Memphis 901 FC at Detroit City Preview

Early afternoon soccer awaits Memphis 901 FC as the Detroit City women’s team is hosting a USL W League semi-final after the men’s match.

Consecutive lopsided score lines have interrupted what has been a steady stream of close games for Memphis. Prior to a 5-1 win against Phoenix Rising and a 4-1 defeat to Orange County last time out, seven of their last eight games had been a draw or decided by a single goal.

Detroit and Memphis are no stranger to close games against one another. Their two matches last season ended in defensive-minded draws. The two clubs have met five times since 2022 (including once in the playoffs) and 901 FC have yet to be beaten, winning twice. Memphis is 3-3-1 this season in inter-conference contests.

Stephen Glass has kept the same back four the past three games — Akeem Ward, AB Cissoko, Lucas Turci and Carson Vom Steeg. Whether there is an adjustment after the blowout loss or not, Memphis will have to keep track of Detroit midfielder Maxi Rodriguez. Rodriguez has been pivotal for Detroit as of late, scoring four times in their past five games. He currently ties Marlon Santos with seven goals on the year.

Detroit stumbled after bowing out of the U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 16 to Indy Eleven but have since bounced back. They have won three and drawn once in their past five games, putting them in fifth place in the (less jumbled together) Eastern conference standings with 27 points in 15 games. Memphis have played 18 games, collected 25 points and are in seventh place out West.
