After a very alarming month of July where they went winless and gave up at least four goals in six different games, Memphis 901 FC has done a fabulous job of battening down the hatches defensively over the last four games. In fact, over the course of those four games they have conceded just one goal and kept three clean sheets. Drew Romig has been playing very well and the return of Carson vom Steeg from injury has been a boon for the Beale Street Boys. Now they must go back on the road, despite having only been home for one of their last five games. This time it’s a date with former boss Ben Pirmann and the Charleston Battery.

It cannot be overstated how dramatic of a turnaround that Memphis has had defensively over the last four games. They sent seven straight games without keeping a clean sheet. In those seven games they gave up a whopping 22 goals while only managing to score 10 of their own. That was not going to be a recipe for success. Fortunately, immediately prior to that rough stretch they had been on a club record 12 match unbeaten streak. And since the Pittsburgh game at the beginning of August, they have conceded just one goal. In fact, the Beale Street Boys have conceded just once in the last 389 minutes.

Considering the solid run of defensive form Memphis has been on these last four games, they might be catching the Battery at a very opportune time. That’s because the Battery are struggling mightily to score goals at the moment. While Memphis has held three teams scoreless in the last four games, Charleston has been held scoreless twice in their last four games: a 1-0 home loss to the Oakland Roots on August 4th and then a 2-0 loss on the road against Orange County SC on August 19th. Their other two games weren’t much better as they were held to a single goal in each of them: a 1-1 draw away to Louisville City and a 1-0 win on the road for Ben Pirmann against the first team he managed, Detroit City.
