Well, that’s a wrap folks. The Ziaire Williams saga has come to an end in Memphis.

In a rather unceremonious fashion too, I’ll add. That’s the best word I can think to describe it… What I felt with the announcement of the trade.

But on Friday afternoon, the Grizzlies shipped out—former lottery pick—Williams. To the Brooklyn Nets attached with a second-round pick in 2030 via the Dallas Mavericks. Memphis in return will receive Mamadi Diakite. As well as the draft rights to the 54th pick in this year’s draft, Nemanja Dangubic.

It’s without a doubt one bummer of an ending for Z on Beale St.

In three seasons with the Grizzlies, it’s safe to say Williams never reached his potential. At least if you’d ask me. He averaged 7.5 PTS, 2.6 REB, and 1.2 AST. That’s on 42.6/30.1/80.3% shooting splits.

Not much to hang your hat on there. And there were flashes too. Look no further than the playoffs his rookie season. That year? It was easy to get caught up in the ‘Magic 8 Ball’ and his production.

Meanwhile, for Diakite he will be playing on his sixth team in five years. Not the most inspiring replacement. But I doubt he sees much—if any—playing time for the Grizzlies. Trying to be honest.

The most obvious reason for the trade? A bit of bookkeeping. Williams was due to make over $6 million this upcoming season. Diakite? He’s guaranteed less than $1.5 million.

That small bit of flexibility, I imagine… Will give the Grizzlies the finances to bring back Luke Kennard. I’d imagine. But we’ll see.

All I know, is that I wish nothing but the best to Ziaire Williams. Now a firm part of the Nets’ rebuild, Z will have the chance to maximize his potential. And Memphis will be able to put forth the optimal roster to compete for a championship.

And I’d imagine that’s exactly what they want.
