Redbirds Shutout Gwinnett for Fourth Win in a Row
Dakota Hudson and company danced their way around nine hits to give up no runs.
The Redbirds beat the Gwinnett Stripers 3-0 in their Thursday evening matchup, improving their record to 7-5.
Memphis has now won the first three games of the series and their fourth-consecutive win.
It was the longtime MLB pitcher with the Cardinals, Dakota Hudson who took the mound for the Redbirds and was very effective in his outing.
Though there were some hairy innings for the righty, he was able to work his way out of trouble each time.
In six innings, Hudson gave up no runs on eight hits, walked none, and struck out seven.
His solid outing lowered his ERA to 2.87, a great recovery after a rocky first two starts of the season.
The Redbirds once again scored in the first inning, like they had in the first two games of the series.
This time, it was shortstop Paul DeJong who singled home second baseman Masyn Winn to give the ‘Birds a 1-0 lead.
It was DeJong’s fourth RBI since joining the club on Tuesday on his rehab assignment from the Cardinals.
Right-handed reliever Kyle Leahy took care of the Stripers for the next two innings, giving up only one hit, one walk, and struck out two.
The Redbirds delivered some needed insurance in the eighth when first baseman Juniel Querecuto smacked a double to right field to plate two runs to make it 3-0.
It was RBI’s three and four on the season for the 30-year-old Venezuelan native.
That left the ninth inning for left-hander JoJo Romer to put the game on ice for Memphis.
Romero made easy work of the Stripers, going 1-2-3 in the inning with two strikeouts.
Memphis will look to go five in a row against the Stripers Friday evening at 6:05 CDT from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Connor Thomas will be facing off against Jared Shuster on the mound, and the lefty Thomas will look to get on track after a rough start, resulting in 12.27 ERA.
