As Memphis 901 FC gears up for the final third of the 2024 season, they have added some reinforcements. Prior to last week’s game against San Antonio, they announced the additions of goalkeeper Triston Henry and forward Jon Bakero. Both were called on in the 1-0 win. This week, the team has acquired Panos Armenakas from the Phoenix Rising. Armenakas was part of the Rising title-winning team last season. Could he be called into action this week for Memphis 901 FC?
After a rough start to the season, 901 FC has stabilized and is hovering around the 4th spot in the Western Conference. Their recent form has been a little bit of back and forth. At the end of June was a 5-1 thumping of the Phoenix Rising. Armenakas joked on Thursday that the heavy loss to Memphis was part of why he decided to come play for the Beale Street Boys. It also led to the dismissal of Danny Stone as the manager, who was not the first man to be fired this year after a loss to Memphis 901 FC.
Following the win against Phoenix, Memphis went on the road to Orange County SC and fell 4-1. They were able to bounce back the very next week, with a win on the road against Detroit City (who still has never beaten 901 FC). But the next road game was a loss to FC Tulsa. However, their return to AutoZone Park saw a very shorthanded home squad grind out a gutsy win by a final score of 1-0.
The same cannot be said for this Saturday’s visitors. Things have not gone well for the El Paso Locomotive this season. They too relieved their manager following a loss this season to Memphis 901 FC. Wilmer Cabrera was appointed to finish out the season. Cabrera has previously managed in the USL Championship with the Rio Grande Valley Toros, as well as in MLS with the Houston Dynamo and the now-defunct Chivas USA. Unfortunately, they have lost their last five games and are winless in six straight. They’ve found it especially difficult to score goals, putting the ball in the net just twice during their five game losing streak.
