Memphis 901 FC vs. FC Tulsa Preview
Scoring goals had been something of a struggle for Memphis 901 FC their last several games. Not since a 5-1 win on June 28 against Phoenix Rising had they scored multiple goals in a game. In fact, they had been held either scoreless or to a single goal in seven of their last eight games. But Wednesday night saw them put that streak to an emphatic end as they unleashed a barrage of five goals on Miami FC. They now return to AutoZone Park and will hope to keep the goalscoring going as they play host to FC Tulsa.
Perhaps one reason for the struggles in front of goal was the team taking time to come together around the new signings. The Beale Street Boys have done a good job of continuing to find new ways to bolster the roster as the final third of the season starts to press on. They brought in Jon Bakero and Panos Armenakas, as well as Triston Henry. Wednesday night in Miami was everything coming together and clicking.
901 FC fell behind in just the 5th minute but didn’t take long to respond. Dylan Borczak got the rally started with a header ten minutes later to even the score. A tense back and forth followed until late in the game when Memphis exploded for a staggering four goals in the final ten minutes. Some nice work by Bruno Lapa and Noe Meza forced a Miami own goal. That’s when the floodgates opened. Nighte Pickering scored from just outside the box after Meza forced an error from the Miami keeper. Samuel Careaga got in on the action with a blast from 15 yards out. And then Alvaro Quezada wrapped up the proceedings in stoppage time. What was most impressive about this win was, not just four different players scoring, but it the team leaving no doubt against a cellar-dweller in Miami only a few games after a home struggle against cellar-dweller El Paso Locomotive that ended in a scoreless draw.
Memphis 901 FC’s opponent for this home game is a team they recently faced on the road. Back on July 20, the Beale Street Boys took a trip to Tulsa and fell 1-0. The man that did them in however, for Memphis 901 FC striker Philip Goodrum, is no longer with the team. He has signed with Louisville City in the Eastern Conference. Tulsa, who sit just outside the playoff places, must now figure out where the goalscoring is going to come from. Prior to his departure, Goodrum had scored in the last three games in which Tulsa had not been shut out. They may be on the right track to finding that out though, as in their last game, a draw against New Mexico United, they were able to get three goals on the board (two of which came from defender Alexis Souahy. Similar to 901 FC, that was just the second time in their last eight games Tulsa had scored more than a single goal.
