Memphis 901 FC vs. Monterey Bay Preview

Earlier this week Memphis 901 FC got back into the win column with a comprehensive and professional 2-0 win over Miami United. However, that was a US Open Cup game and not a USL regular season game. The Beale Street Boys are still looking for their second win in league play. They get an opportunity to do that on Saturday when Monterey Bay comes to town.

Memphis 901 FC began the season well enough as they defeated the Las Vegas Lights 2-1 at AutoZone Park. That was their last league win. They fell 2-1 the following week at home to Indy Eleven. After that they had a week off before they took a trip out to California to face the Sacramento Republic. It was a game they played well enough to win but eventually came up just short, losing 1-0 on a goal with less than five minutes to play. Next was a return home to face Orange County SC. Despite playing well again they conceded two goals within minutes of each other and never recovered, falling 2-0. Most recently was a trip to Loudoun. This time they took the lead off a free kick from Samuel Careaga but were eventually undone and fell 2-1.

Monterey Bay comes into this game having lost just once in seven games across all competitions. The lone loss came against San Antonio FC. Other than that it’s been mostly smooth sailing for manager Frank Yallop, who formerly managed in MLS with the San Jose Earthquakes, the LA Galaxy, and the Chicago Fire. They followed that loss up with a 1-0 win over the Oakland Roots before they beat the Las Vegas Lights 3-1. Most recently, they too had a US Open Cup win over a lower division side as they beat Irvine Zeta of NISA by a score of 2-1.
