Memphis Hustle Trade Alert (August 31, 2023)
Today, the Memphis Hustle announced that the team acquired the returning player rights to guard David Johnson and a 2023 second-round pick (49th overall) from the Raptors 905 (G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors) for the Hustle’s 2024 first-round pick and the returning player rights to guards Derrick Walton Jr. and Tremont Waters.
The 6’4″ former Louisville Cardinals guard, David Johnson, appeared in 74 games (48 starts) across two seasons with the Raptors 905 after being selected with the 47th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He averaged 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in nearly 23 minutes per game across those two seasons with the Raptors 905. Additionally, Johnson made two appearances with the Toronto Raptors during the 2021-22 season, where he played a little under two minutes total with only one field goal attempt.
The 6’0″ former Michigan Wolverines guard Derrick Walton Jr. was acquired by the Memphis Hustle in a trade with the Motor City Cruise (G League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons) in August 2022 but never played a game for the Hustle as he signed with the NBL’s (National Basketball League) Sydney Kings in Australia for the 2022-2023 season in July 2022.
The 5’10” former LSU Tigers guard and 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year, Tremont Waters, was acquired by the Hustle in January 2023 in a trade with the Santa Cruz Warriors (G League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors). He never played a game with the Hustle, as he was already signed to and playing with the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A in France.
The 2023-24 NBA G League Draft will be on October 28th at 12 p.m. CST. NBA G League training camp will begin soon afterward, starting October 30th, with the season slated to begin on November 10th.
